There are two main differences between any pump you buy or get from insurance:

Closed Systems

A closed system pump has a barrier or filter between the milk collection kit and the pump mechanism to prevent contamination by bacteria, mold, or viruses. Getting new flanges, tubes, and filters insures your pump is clean and ready to go if not brand new. It also helps the motor have a long happy life. These pumps usually have a longer warranty and last around 2 years with continuous daily use.

Open Systems

In an open system the air (and anything that gets into the tubing) flows freely from the motor to your milk. It is NOT possible to completely sterilize the inside of an open system pump, you would have to take it completely apart and even then there are parts you can’t clean. These particles can also cause motor malfunction. Which is why these pumps tend to burn out in 6 months to 1 year of continuous daily use.
